My first job in retail was selling children’s shoes in my hometown of Swansea, in Wales. It was a crash course in customer service and the art of the sale—because the average age of my customer was 5 years old. I then worked my way through university as a cashier at Tesco in the UK, and I ended up spending 21 years with the company.
My retail career also included Woolworths and has taken me to Europe, Asia, Australia, and now the U.S. I joined Amazon in February as Worldwide Vice President of Amazon Fresh, and I recently moved to Seattle with my husband, two children, and our bulldog, George. I am thrilled to work alongside colleagues who are dedicated to making customers’ lives easier with a best-in-class grocery shopping experience.
The values I learned early in my career ultimately led me here, as did the people who guided me along the way. Below are my five lessons that helped me find a career I love and succeed as a female leader.
