The Amazon Star programme is a UK-wide Amazon campaign to thank Amazon employees who make an outstanding contribution to their community through volunteering, fundraising, and using their unique skills and talents to help others.
Following the recent news of our first 2021 Amazon Star winner, we’re now revealing that the second winner in this year’s awards is Phil Hayden, an associate at the Amazon sortation centre in Haydock.
Phil was nominated for his incredible dedication to the local community, which includes donating plasma and platelets every four or five weeks for the last 36 years. He recently made his 663rd donation – a truly remarkable achievement.
Phil is also an NHS volunteer responder, supporting the COVID-19 vaccination and booster programme as a steward.
He has also recently signed up for the 2022 Macmillan Northumberland Mighty Hike a 26 mile coastal walk to raise money for the charity. His Amazon team plans to match each donation he gets ahead of the event.
Phil’s unwavering dedication to helping others saw him awarded a personalised Dream Box with a £2,000 travel voucher for him and his wife to visit Canada. The prize was chosen as Phil shared that he wanted to take his wife to Canada for their honeymoon but couldn’t due to weather conditions. Last year, they wanted to go for their 25th wedding anniversary but weren’t able to again, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Phil, who has inspired several members of the team at Amazon in Haydock to become blood donors, said: “When I was younger, I always wanted to give blood and recently, I’ve been combining this with my role as an NHS volunteer. I really enjoy supporting causes in my community and I’m absolutely amazed and so thankful to my team for nominating me for this award.”
Mark Yates, General Manager at Amazon in Haydock, said: “Phil is a much loved and highly valued member of our team who is incredibly dedicated to helping others in our community. He is fully deserving of his Amazon Star award and everyone at Amazon in Haydock is really proud of all the great things he does for the many charities he works with every year.”
Over the past two years, Amazon employees in our UK operations network have been doing exceptional work to deliver for our customers during the pandemic. Many of them have been combining their great work at Amazon with serving their communities through volunteering their time, raising funds and much more.
To recognise and reward our heroes who have helped others, we established an Amazon Stars programme in 2020, calling on our employees to nominate their colleagues who have gone above and beyond for others.
Almost 1,000 nominations were received in the UK this year, with inspiring stories of employees serving colleagues, customers and communities during a time when they were needed more than ever. Phil is the second of three winners in the UK, and the final winner in this year’s competition will be revealed soon.
