Amazon has been serving customers in the UK for more than 25 years. During this time, we have continued to deliver for people across the UK, helped UK small and medium-sized businesses to thrive, and contributed to local economies through our skills, education, and charity programmes. Our total tax contributions totalled more than £5.8 billion last year, including over £1 billion in taxes borne.

1. Amazon is a top 10 taxpayer in the UK

As we continue to make investments in our UK operations and workforce, we help fund public services and infrastructure across the country. When comparing our 2023 data to the most recent PwC Total Tax Contribution survey of The 100 Group (an independent study which analyses UK tax contributions from FTSE 100 companies and other large UK private companies), Amazon ranks in the top 10 largest UK taxpayers for taxes borne and collected, as well as for the overall total tax contribution. For the fourth consecutive year, Amazon ranked in the top 10 for total capital investment and in 2023 ranked in the top five for business rates.

  • Our total tax contribution (combining taxes borne and taxes collected) was more than £5.8 billion (2023: £4.3 billion)
  • Our total taxes borne was more than £1 billion (2023: £932 million)
  • The taxes we collected and administered for the government were more than an additional £4.7 billion as a result of our business activities in the UK (2023: £3.4 billion)

2. We have been investing in the UK for more than 25 years

Our investment includes building new infrastructure including our fulfilment centres, corporate offices, and data centres (known as capital expenditure), and by creating jobs in towns and cities across the UK (known as operating expenditures).

These direct investments raise the economic activity in a given region and create a ripple effect through the economy as the firms that supply goods and services to Amazon expand and associated household spending increases.

The planned investment over three years will create thousands of full-time jobs, four new fulfilment centres, and two new London office buildings.

Below is a summary of our overall investments in the UK:

  • In 2024, the total revenues of Amazon’s activities in the UK were more than £29 billion
  • Since 2010, we’ve made direct investments in our UK operations of more than £80 billion
  • Last year, we invested £1.6 billion in our infrastructure

3. Amazon supports regional economies across the UK

Earlier this year, we announced plans to invest £40 billion in the UK over the next three years (2025-2027). This investment includes building four new fulfilment centres and new delivery stations nationwide, as well as upgrades and expansions to the existing network of over 100 operations buildings across the country.

The investment will create thousands of new permanent, full-time jobs in the UK, with the vast majority outside of London and the South East.

A state-of-the-art facility in Hull is set to open later in 2025, creating 2,000 jobs, with recruitment going live in July.

These include 2,000 jobs at the previously announced state-of-the-art fulfilment centre in Hull and 2,000 jobs at another in Northampton, plus additional positions at new sites in the East Midlands and at delivery stations across the country.

This is in addition to our existing development centres in Cambridge, Edinburgh, Swansea, and London working on Prime Video, Alexa, and the shopping experience on our online store.

4. Amazon is creating rewarding and skilled jobs

Our total permanent workforce of more than 75,000 employees makes us one of the top 10 private sector employers in the UK, according to PwC. Our employees are spread across the UK in a variety of corporate and technology roles in Amazon and Amazon Web Services (AWS), including software development, product management, and engineering, as well as jobs in the operations teams in our fulfilment centres, sort centres, and delivery stations.

The Career Choice education benefit is helping employees across the UK make their career aspirations a reality. Here’s how three employees made bold career moves ranging from HR to data and training.

This year, we marked more than a decade of our popular Career Choice employee growth programme which pre-pays 100% of tuition for courses in high-demand fields, up to £3,000 per year per employee. More than 23,000 Amazon employees in the UK have participated in Career Choice since the programme launched.

5. We are making an impact on local communities

Hands cradling blue heart icon, 1 million+ families helped through Multibank

We co-founded Multibank with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and since launching in 2022, we have donated more than 10 million surplus goods to help more than a million families in need. The first Multibank launched in Fife, Scotland followed by sites in Wigan, Swansea, West London, and Tees Valley.

Earlier this year, we launched a sixth community donations hub in the West Midlands to ensure that families will receive more than a million orders from Multibanks across the UK in 2025.

6. Amazon is empowering small and medium sized businesses

Our investments in the industry support jobs across Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon Publishing, Prime Video, Audible, Amazon Fashion, Amazon Music, Amazon Games, and more.

We’re also committed to supporting the next generation of UK creative talent by funding apprenticeships and traineeships across TV, film, and books.

Through its new Regional Creatives Fund, Amazon will help charities create pathways into creative careers.
