Our development centre and customer service centre teams in Edinburgh had an early start this morning, visiting St Joseph’s RC Primary and Broomhouse Primary to serve kids breakfast and give them a healthy start to the day – to mark the start of our partnership with Magic Breakfast in Scotland.
Magic Breakfast provides healthy breakfasts to children who arrive at school too hungry to learn. In the 2017-18 academic year, we’re funding one million Magic Breakfasts in 77 schools across the UK, including five in Scotland – two in Edinburgh, one in Glasgow, one in Dunfermline and one in Gourock.
“It was great to visit Broomhouse Primary and St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary schools in Edinburgh this morning and see the children enjoying a positive, focused and fun start to the day with a healthy, nutritious breakfast,” said Graeme Smith, Managing Director, Amazon Development Centre Scotland. “At Amazon, we want to help children reach their full potential in the digital world, so giving them the fuel for learning is key to this. The team are really excited about volunteering at the breakfast clubs and meeting the kids, parents and teachers.”
Graeme and the team were also joined by constituency MSP Gordon MacDonald, who came to speak to the schoolchildren and learn more about the positive impact the breakfast provision has on pupils. After visiting, he also tabled a motion in parliament commending the work of Magic Breakfast and Amazon in Scotland.
“It has been a pleasure to eat breakfast with the pupils at St Joseph’s Primary and Broomhouse Primary this morning and hear from them and their teachers how important it is for a child to have a healthy meal inside them before they start their morning lessons, so that they can concentrate and make the most of the great educational opportunities they are being offered here in Edinburgh,” he said.
The generosity of Magic Breakfast and Amazon also allows us to feed all our children, not just those that attend breakfast club. This has really helped children that can't attend breakfast club, but still come to school hungry, access the fuel they need to learn and play.
Jamie Petrie, Head Teacher at Broomhouse Primary School in Edinburgh, added: “Our partnership with Magic Breakfast and Amazon has given the pupils at the school an opportunity to start the day ready to achieve and attain. It has allowed us to break down the barriers that hunger brings to children with tough realities. The food and fruit juice is the high quality that our wonderful children deserve so that they are prepared for all the challenges that lay ahead in the school day.
